Batsford Foundation
Charitable aims
Batsford Arboretum was donated to a charitable trust, The Batsford Foundation, in 1983 by the then owner, the 2nd Lord Dulverton. He wanted to secure the future of the arboretum and protect, develop and enhance both his own developments and the original Oriental plantings and landscaping by Lord Redesdale.
The broad purposes of The Batsford Foundation are:
- To advance the education of the public in the knowledge and practice of all forms of cultivation and the study of historic buildings and their contents and surroundings including gardens, arboreta and historic landscapes and the promotion of research therein
- To promote the conservation, protection and improvements of the physical and natural environment.
As owners of Batsford Arboretum, the Trustees deliver these objectives largely through their management of the Arboretum with a focus on the botanical conservation of both exotic and native trees and shrubs and promoting education.
Good relations are maintained with various botanic gardens which have supplied wild collected seeds and plants to the arboretum and the trees and shrubs are recorded to aid management and further botanical work. The trustees aim to encourage people to visit this unique heritage site throughout the seasons.
